Grandpas Love: A Story of Love, Family, and Tradition!

Going Fishing with My Grandpas (Bilingual: English & Spanish)

Going Fishing with My Grandpas was inspired by one of the most treasured memories I have with my grandson. From the moment he woke up, he could hardly contain his excitement. He kept asking, “Grandpa, when are we going fishing?” He was jumping up and down, counting the minutes until we arrived at South Padre Island.

Watching the joy on his face as he caught his very first fish is a memory I will cherish forever. We celebrated the moment, took pictures to remember it, and spent the rest of the day walking along the beach, collecting seashells and building sandcastles together.

Even today, when I think back on that special day, my eyes fill with tears. They are tears of joy and gratitude for the beautiful memories we created as a family. Those moments reminded me that the greatest gifts we can give our children and grandchildren are our time, our love, and experiences they will carry in their hearts forever.

This heartwarming bilingual story encourages families to slow down, spend quality time together, and create memories that last a lifetime. Whether you’re reading in English or Spanish, I hope this book inspires grandparents, parents, and children to make their own unforgettable adventures together.

Sound familiar?

You speak to them in Spanish. They answer back in English.

It's the quiet worry in so many families: the kids understand abuela, but the words are slipping. And most "bilingual" books don't help — one page in English, the next in Spanish, and children only ever read the side they already know.

Does this sound like your family?

  • The grandkids understand Spanish but won't speak it
  • One side of the family reads the story, the other waits
  • The bilingual books at home only ever get read in English
  • You want them to love both languages — not study them

Picture story time when both languages live in the same line

  • ✓ They hear English and Spanish in the same breath — every sentence
  • ✓ Abuela reads a line, your child reads it right back
  • ✓ Spanish stops feeling like homework and starts feeling like family
  • ✓ One story, everyone on the same page — literally

A story that really happened — grandpa, dad, and the kids

The per-sentence method

How both languages take root

1

Read the line in English

Every sentence appears first in clear, natural English.

2

Read the same line in Spanish

The exact same sentence follows in Spanish — same meaning, same rhythm, right underneath.

3

Watch them say it back

Children connect the two versions naturally — sentence by sentence, night after night.

Start with one story. Or bring the whole family in.

Every option reads the same way — every sentence in English, then in Spanish.

From Grandma Cookie's kitchen table

When you can't find the words in both languages, I wrote them down.

I'm Maria "Cookie" Carrales, a grandmother from Mission, Texas. This story really happened — my grandson Isaiah, his dad, his grandpa, and his great-grandpa, four generations on one pier. I wrote it the way our family talks: in both languages, every sentence, so nobody at story time is ever left out.

  • ✓ A real family story — four generations, one first catch
  • ✓ Every sentence in English and Spanish, side by side
  • ✓ Read in bedrooms and classrooms across the country

Questions families ask

What ages is this written for?+
It's written for children roughly 3 to 8 as a read-aloud, and early readers enjoy reading it on their own. The sentences are short and warm — built for bedtime, not for a lesson.
What if my child only speaks English — or only Spanish?+
That's exactly who it's built for. Because every sentence appears in both languages, children follow the story in the language they know while hearing the other one line by line. Nobody gets lost, and nobody is left out.
Is the Spanish authentic?+
Yes. Cookie is a bilingual author from Mission, Texas, and each Spanish line is the same sentence — not a loose translation. It reads the way real families actually speak.
Can I get a signed copy?+
Yes — Cookie signs books on request. Just add a note at checkout with the name you'd like the dedication made out to.
How fast does it ship?+
Orders ship within 3–5 business days with tracking, and US shipping is free on orders over $35.

My grandson asks for the fishing book every night, and he's starting to say the Spanish words back to me.

Finally a book that looks like our family. The per-sentence Spanish actually helps my kids learn.

I don't speak much Spanish, but having both languages on each line lets me read it with my daughter anyway.
